Bio: Dr.Rajib Mall is Professor of Computer Science & Engineering , and Head Information Technology at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur since 1994. Dr. Mall’s area of interest is program analysis and testing. He has vast practical experience in developing industry-oriented software products. Having an academic experience of a decade and half in IIT Kharagpur, Professor Mall has guided several doctoral dissertations and published over a hundred research articles. He is currently working in the project titled “Free And Open Source Software For Software Engineering”.

Title of the Talk: Intelligent Measurement Systems for Smart[er] Grids Control Abstract: Emerging power systems require significant changes on all layers - planning, operation, markets. Modern control algorithms need to process information acquired from distributed, synchronized measurement systems, and embedded in data streams with variable reporting rates and unknown filtering. Smart grids operation, including control of the energy flow in active distribution grids (and microgrids) adds more challenges to the control layer. Moreover, multiple measurement approaches are still in use: on one side, the inherited time-aggregation based measurements offered by most intelligent electronic devices, smart meters and power quality monitoring equipment; while on the other side, large data streams reported by Phasor Measurement Units and the synchronization requirements for high-resolution waveform-based monitoring devices with fault-recorder functionality. Introduction of new technologies (materials, sensors, wireless communications, controls) without consideration of human behavior, health outcomes or architectural integrity will inevitably lead to failure of the rapidly changing built environment to meet the most fundamental needs: to be healthy, safe, productive and humane. Infrastructures are needed that are holistically designed to be human centered and adapt to our needs and preferences.  Utility and transportation networks must adapt to dynamic usage, traffic conditions or user behavior with minimum carbon footprint. Title: Some Prospective Applications of Cognitive Radio in 5G Communication Abstract: This presentation will establish a logical basis of using cognitive Radio for 5G communication discussing the researchers’ views. 5G would be the enormous data centric IoT enabled network of Hetnets in which use of mmwave communication, small/femto cells would be common. 5G network would be intelligent. CR is also an smart intelligent device, which may be suitably integrated over cellular networks for better spectrum efficiency, better speed and  low cost  communication. Some useful research directions such as two-tier VoIP communication over Cognitive radio network, Cognitive Macro-Femto network and the integration of Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) with CR to be used as backhaul technology for designing remote healthcare monitoring system, equally applicable to other IoT enabled solution will be the focus of the talk.
