biplabTitle: Cyber Security Challenges and Solutions for the Internet of Things

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a great opportunity to connect people, information, and things, which will in turn cause a paradigm shift in the way we work, interact, and think. The IoT is envisioned as the enabling technology for smart cities, power grids, health care, and control systems for critical installments and public infrastructure. This diversity, increased control and interaction of devices, and the fact that IoT systems use public networks to transfer large amounts of data make them a prime target for cyber attacks. In addition, IoT devices are usually small, low cost and have limited resources. Therefore, any protocol designed for IoT systems should not only be secure but also efficient in terms of usage of chip area, energy, storage, and processing. This presentation will start by highlighting the unique security requirements of IoT devices and the inadequacy of existing security protocols and techniques of the Internet in the context to IoT systems. Next, we will focus on security solutions for the IoT, with special focus on protection against physical and side channel attacks. In particular, we will focus on mutual authentication protocols for IoT devices based on security primitives that exploit hardware level characteristics of IoT devices.

Biography: Dr. Biplab Sikdar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore. Prior to joining the National University of Singapore in 2013, he was an Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2007, and an Associate Professor from 2007 to 2013 in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, USA. He received his B. Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, India, M. Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA in 1996, 1998 and 2001, respectively. He held a Verifone Fellowship during his studies in IIT Kanpur and was awarded the Charles M. Close doctoral award at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Sikdar has held visiting professor appointments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, University of Sydney, Australia, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Kansai University, Japan. He has also been awarded the Tan Chin Tuan fellowship from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, the Leiv Eiriksson fellowship from the Research Council of Norway, and the Japan society for Promotion of Science fellowship.

Dr. Sikdar’s area of expertise is in the broad area of computer networks. His research interests include wireless MAC protocols, transport protocols, network security and queuing theory. He has worked extensively on various aspects of network protocols including routing, peer-to-peer, and transport protocols for wired networks, medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless networks, and information gathering and dissemination protocols for energy constrained ad-hoc wireless and sensor networks. His research project on biologically motivated models for computer networks was given a CAREER award by the National Science Foundation (USA) in 2004 and his work on detecting session hijacks in wireless networks won the best paper award at IEEE GLOBECOM 2008. His research has been funded by both government and industry including Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, USA, National Science Foundation, USA, Intel Corporation, WiMAX Forum, New York Power Authority, USA, Ministry of Education, Singapore and Microsoft Corporation. He has also held consulting positions with WiMAX Forum and Microsoft Corporation. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and has previously served on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Communications. Dr. Sikdar is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi and a senior member of IEEE
